Computer Professional Bodies:      are the regulatory bodies set up efficiently to control and maintain professional and ethical standard in the field of computer science.

FUNCTIONS OF COMPUTER PROFESSIONAL BODIES

1.       Nigeria Computer Society (NCS): was formed in 1978 as computer association of Nigeria (COAN) and later transformed to NCS in 2002.

Functions of NCS

a). To bring together Nigerians around the world working in computer technology

b). To promote computer and internet technology in Nigeria

c). To promote training of computer professionals

d). To provide on-line banning to all Nigerians

2. Computer Professional Registration Council of Nigeria (CPRN): was established in 1990

Functions of CPRN

a). control and supervise the practice of computing in the country

b). screening individual and co-operate body seeking to register as computer professionals

c). determine academic standard in computing

d). accreditation of institutions courses and programmes.

3. Information Technology Association of Nigeria (ITAN): was established in 1991 as MIVAN (Micro Computer Venders Association of Nigeria). It later turned to COVAN (Computer Vendors Association of Nigeria)

Functions of ITAN

a). To provide first hand information and communication technology

b). To create platform for the cooperation and interaction between international experts and indigenous professionals

c). To encourage the sale of high quality computers.

4. Function of Nigeria Internet Group:

a) To promote internet as a tool for personal and national development

b) To promote provision of internet access for all Nigerians.

5) Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC)

            Is the telecom regulator in Nigeria

 a) Responsible for licensing and registering private telecommunications 

6)  Federal Ministry of Science and Technology

a) To coordinate the diverse effort of technology for the development of different sectors such as education, medicine, agriculture and communication.
